Karen Beard-Greer wins the NZDSN Leadership Award

Congratulations to our CEO, Karen Beard-Greer for winning the NZDSN Leadership Award. Karen is being presented the award by Julie Ann Genter, Associate Minister of Health. 

The award is to acknowledge and recognise leadership within the disability sector by a person who may have shown initiative to change organisational culture and ways of operating to be more responsive and person centred/directed. Demonstration of collaboration and partnership are also a feature. 

 

Hearing Loss Workshop for the Korean Community

ILS is hosting a hearing loss workshop for the Korean community and service providers.  The workshop is for those who want to learn to

  • how your hearing system works
  • what causes hearing loss and what are the symptoms
  • how to care/maintain your hearing aids

The presenter is Hearing Therapist, Jacqui Taylor.

City Impact Church mobilises volunteers into the community to assist unsupported families in a practical way.

Strength and balance class for preventing falls

People aged 65 and over, who are at risk of falls and fractures, can attend classes run by Live Stronger for Longer to help build strength and balance. A range of classes are available, including strength training, low impact exercises, pilates and stretching. Find a class near you.

Suitable for families/caregivers or staff working with individuals with limited or no speech or who have language processing problems in their later years. 

Learn how to help elderly people suffering onset dementia/Alzheimers or rehabilitating after a stroke with communication skills through the use of visual supports.  Learn how to use visual routines to aid daily life. 

All workshops in 2018 will be held in the Point Chevalier Library Meeting Room, Cnr Great North and Point Chevalier Roads, Auckland

Fight the Flu this winter

The Immunisation Advisory Centre is running a Fight Flu New Zealand campaign to help spread the word about flu immunisation. 
 
It has produced a general flu brochure available in many languages on its website to help ensure people who are eligible for a free immunisation don’t miss out. You can also keep up-to-date on the Fight Flu Facebook page.
