A new chapter for AgePlus

AgePlus was started 5 years ago by Tanja and Bjorn Binzegger.  Tanja and Bjorn worked to support the Browns Bay Senior Community by providing a range of services and equipment to enhance positive aging. In 2016 the opportunity came for the Binzeggers' to return home to Switzerland. Tanja approached the Independent Living Service Charitable Trust (ILS) to become the new owner of AgePlus. This was a natural fit. ILS is a trusted community owned, not for profit organisation with the same philosophical underpinning as AgePlus and has been serving Aucklanders for 36 years. ILS is committed
to continuing to support the Browns Bay and North Shore Communties through its long-standing networks.

The ILS head office is located at 14 Erson Ave, Royal Oak (formerly Disability Resource Centre Auckland). The Royal Oak location houses a large home mobility and equipment store along with fully accessible conference facilities. It is the hub for the ILS Mobile Information and Equipment Service which takes information into a wide variety of Auckland's communities through tailored presentations to community groups, retirement villages, social and disability support groups. This service also runs an
in-home demonstration service to assist people with selecting the right scooter or power chair that best suits their needs and home environment.

ILS holds contracts with the Ministry of Health to provide disability information and advice, a free service for Aucklanders from Franklin to Rodney. They have a range of specialist Information Consultants who can connect and direct you to the right services, funding streams and solutions for all ages including seniors, health & community services. Included in this team is a specialist Asian Information team speaking Mandarin, Cantonese and Korean. In addition to the AgePlus team living in Browns Bay so too do two of the Asian Information team. Some customers will already have met Felix Lin who has been working in-store at AgePlus (Felix speaks Cantonese). Marian Park, a resident in Browns Bay, is the
ILS Korean Information Consultant.

The ILS specialist Access and Advisory team have also been involved in the Browns Bay community. Julianne McEldowney worked with the Browns Bay local board in 2015 to complete an assessment to improve accessibility for all people in and around the Browns Bay shopping precinct. In addition to this work, the team offers Barrier Free Audits and Be. Welcome Assessments throughout New Zealand. Some of their well-known projects include the accessibility of Auckland Airport, the Zoo, AUT, the Museum, the Art Galleries.

In October 2014, ILS opened its second home mobility and equipment store in Botany South (308 Te Irirangi Drive) and now the addition of AgePlus as a third store for North Shore customers.

All the ILS stores offer a wide range of equipment and aids to make daily living easier. You can hire a range of mobility equipment including wheelchairs, walkers, knee scooters, mobility scooter and crutches. You can shop online at www.ilsnz.org.
